Presteigne St Andrews FC’s annual Maundy Thursday quiz was again hailed a great success as around 70 people enjoyed a really good night out at the clubhouse at Llanandras Park.

Our thanks go to question master Tim Sanders for setting what was a highly challenging yet competitive questions and for the 15 teams that braved the cold weather to turn out for the evening.

You probably need no information regarding the side that went on to win the quiz – yes, Norton United again took the top honours although they were pushed all the way in what turned out to be something of a ‘derby’ match at the top of the leader board.

Norton City ended up finishing second, but only two points behind the winning team ,while a largely Llangunllo-based squad finished third – I didn’t quite catch their name but it involved a goose although, unlike a number of those teams in the competition, there was nothing suggestive or just plain rude about it!

Our thanks must go to Dot Griffiths for her hard work in organising the evening – not only was there the collating of the teams and the sorting out of the PA etc, but Dot also sourced prizes for the draw and carried out said draw in order to raise additional funds.

Thanks to Len for the use of the PA, and to Clive and Debbie Field who collected in the scoresheets after every round and, in particular, to Marian Sanders for undertaking the scoring duties on the top table.

Among the many things we learned on the night was the a Golden Eye was a duck; Denmark joined the EU in the same year as Great Britain and that the only footballer to appear for both Manchester clubs, Everton and Liverpool was Peter Beardsley.

The only other thing my team learned was that, when the question master is an avid fan of a certain West Midlands club that plays in the Premier League in a claret and blue strip, to call your team ‘Villa are doomed’ was possibly not the best move.

Let’s face it, we weren’t going to get the benefit of too many fifty-fifty calls if our answer was ‘almost right’, were we?

But it was good to see so many people down at Llanandras Park – especially people who might not normally have cause to go down there – so thanks for your support and put the date in your diary for next year.  Maundy Thursday will be a bit later in 2014 – it will be on  Thursday, 17 April.
