The Reserves were well below their best

Presteigne Reserves’ manager Mark Weiland admitted his side had been well below its best when beaten 3-2 by visiting Builth Wells Reserves on Saturday, 26 October.

‘Weedo’ felt the main problem had stemmed from his side scoring early on and then assuming it was going to be something of a walk in the park.

“We started really well and scored after five minutes from a Richard Wilding through ball that put top scorer Duane Anning through to neatly finish,” said Mark.

“We then settled a little too much and Builth started to come into the game and they equalised from a freekick that hit the wall and deflected into the other side of the goal – there was nothing goa keeper Trevor Gummer could do with that.

“Builth then took the lead from a long through ball found their striker and he coolly lobbed Trevor in our goal.

“We equalised 10 minutes before half-time after their goal keeper made a poor clearance to Alan stocker who from 20 yards out hit it first time straight back into the unguarded net.

“Strong words were said at half time as we knew we were not good enough and to be fair we responded in the second half and created a lot of chances.

“One of these came from a great cross from Ioan Hughes which Duane Anning met on the half-volley, but their keeper made a hell of a save.

“We carved out one or two more good chances but couldn’t find the net and, as the saying goes, if you don’t take your chances it will cost you and it did.

“Builth took a quick throw and a toe-poked shot from just inside the area was going wide but took a slight deflection and went into the bottom corner.

“We then threw everything at them but it turned out to be one of those days.

“All in all when we went 1-0 up we could of been out of sight after, but we didn’t take our chances and this proved costly.

“This was probably our worst performance of the season but the main thing now is how we respond when we go to Llandrindod Wells Reserves next week.”
