Newcastle are Sparey Cup champions

Newcastle are the new holders of the Alfred Sparey Cup after they came from behind to beat Sunday Saints 3-1 in the final at Llanandras Park on Sunday, 18 May.

In what was a good, even contest played in hot weather, the Saints took the lead through an opportunist strike by Steve Goodwin.

He spotted the Newcastle goalkeeper off his line and, from around 40 yards out, he came up with a tremendous lobbed effort to put the Saints in front.

But in a very even first period, Billy Hyett was to equalise for Newcastle when he met a corner with a looping header that found its way into the back of the net.

1-1 at half-time, and the second half was predictably a little slower due to the very hot conditioins, but Newcastle hit the Saints on the break with Tom Bright rounding off the move with a shot from the far post to make it 2-1.

It was Bright again who sealed the game for the Shropshire side when he netted his second and Newcastle’s third around 10 minutes later.

Presteigne St Andrews FC’s cup secretary Tom Ammonds has thanked the Sparey family for their kind donation to sponsor the trophies while he also wished to thank Rees and Co Insurance for their match ball sponsorship – both are very much appreciated.

Ron Sparey chose Newcastle’s Jamie Blythe as the man-of-the-match and he was presented with a bottle of champagne, as kindly donated by Tony Wood.

Many thanks also to all those who turned out to support the final – it was good to see both a good turn out and a good game.
