Good work out(s) against Leominster Town

It was very warm going for the first-team game

Presteigne St Andrews FC and Leominster Town played out two entertaining games in what were sweltering conditions at Llanandras Park on Saturday, 26 July.

The first team were up first and they eventually ran out 5-3 winners over their Leominster counterparts with Christian Roberts scoring a hat-trick and Callum Matthews netting twice.

But the game could have turned when – with Presteigne St Andrews leading 4-3 – Leominster were awarded a penalty.

There was no doubting it – the expression ‘stonewall’ was designed for this incident – and Leominster had a chance to square the match.

But Anthony ‘Rambo’ Vernalls who was in goal for Presteigne got down very well to his left-hand side and made a good save.

Not long after this Christian Roberts popped up unmarked at the far post to complete his hat-trick and put the game to bed, so the penalty save was very much a turning point.

Leominster Reserves on the attack

The Reserve-team fixture followed on from the first-team outing with some players figuring in both.

This was also both lively and high-scoring as the teams did well to overcome the sticky conditions to serve up nine goals as Presteigne ran out 5-4 victors.

I am ‘reliably’ informed that the Presteigne scorers were: Kieran Lusher; Mark Weiland with a penalty; Anthony ‘Rambo’ Vernalls (who swapped his goalkeeping gloves from the first game for an outfield role in this one); Dwayne Anning and Kai Dayas.

But, to paraphrase Eric Morecambe for those of you old enough to remember, that might well be a case of: ‘All the right goalscorers, but not necessarily in the right order..’.

The first team will be at home again on Tuesday, 29 July when they will take on Rhosgoch Rangers in a 7.30pm kick off.
