Disappointing night for the Reserves at Newcastle

Presteigne St Andrews FC

Presteigne St Andrews FCPresteigne Reserves' disappointing start to the new Mid Wales League (South) season continued when they slipped to a heavy defeat at Newcastle on Tuesday, 26 August..

The Reserves went down 8-1 in south Shropshire and so this rounds off a rough opening 10 days to the season for Mark Weiland's side.

It was the second game this season in which the Reserves have shipped eight, while they also conceded six in the home match against Carno Reserves on Saturday.

To be fair, it has been a very tough start to the season as the Reserves have played three sides who are likely to be up there and challenging come the end of the season.

But Mark Weiland is realistic enough to know that they will have to tighten up substantially at the back if they are to get things back on track and there are more tough challenges just around the corner.

Next up, for example, is a trip to the defending champions, Rhayader Town Reserves on Saturday, 30 August and so this is going to be another test of character.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Hay St Marys Reserves beat Sennybridge 2-0, while congratulations to league newcomers Brecon Northcote who picked up their first win when they came away from Talgarth Town Reserves with a 2-1 victory.

But the silver lining in the cloud is that the bottom half of the table is still tight and a couple of good results for the Reserves could have the situation looking a lot brighter – onwards and upwards!
