Preview of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FC
An early ER Jenkins Cup exit for the first team

Presteigne St Andrews FCIt is Welsh Cup action for Presteigne St Andrews FC on Saturday, 30 August when we will host Newbridge-on-Wye in the preliminary round of this year's competition.

At least the opposition shouldn't hold too many surprises this year – sometimes you can end up with long trips to a club in north or south Wales about whom you know very little.

While this is undoubtedly all part of the attraction of playing in the country's top cup competition, it can lead to a few more grey hairs for the management as they try to set up their side for a game against a team they have never seen.

Jamie Allen and Adie Bennett will be keen to get the show back on the road after the disappointments of Bont last weekend.

This will be Newbridge's first away game of the season tomorrow as they have started their league programme with three home matches.

They have shaped up pretty well – there was a 4-0 success over Bont in there, while they also saw off Talgarth Town 3-1 at Lant Field.

But they came unstuck on Wednesday night in what must have been an entertaining game in which Builth Wells made the short trip home with all three points after a 5-3 victory.

The club would like to thank Danny Evans for kindly sponsoring the game against Newbridge – it is much appreciated.

The Reserves' tough start to the season continues tomorrow when Mark Weiland will take his side to the defending Mid Wales League (South) champions, Rhayader Town Reserves.

Rhayader Reserves started the defence of their title with a 2-1 win at Knighton Town Reserves, but they were then beaten 2-0 by Carno Reserves in their second game of the campaign.

Carno are already starting to look like a formidable force in the league this season, but Rhayader will not want to give up their title without a fight, so they will be smarting after that defeat.

Manager Mark Weiland admits you don't need to be a football genius to work out his side's main issue at the moment – defensively they have been disappointing so far and so this is an area in which they have to tighten up quickly.

The Welsh Cup tie against Newbridge will kick off at 2.30pm and the admission prices will be £2.50 for adults; £1.50 for senior citizens and £1.00 for youngsters under the age of 16.
