A home win for the first team

Presteigne St Andrews FC finally recorded their first home league win of the Spar Mid Wales League, second division season when they beat Churchstoke 4-3 at Llanandras Park on Saturday, 24 January.

Despite starting the game well, somehow Jamie Allen’s side found themselves 2-0 in this one and the supporters must have been thinking: ‘Here we go again’.

But Shaun Prince was to lead a dramatic fightback as he netted a hat-trick, with Callum Matthews also finding the target as Presteigne turned the game on its head to lead 4-2.

Goalkeeper Anthony ‘Rambo’ Vernalls then became the latest injury victim when he was forced off with a hand problem, so Jonathan Jones took over between the sticks.

Churchstoke then gave themselves a chance when they scored a third 10 minutes from time, but Jon-Jon made a couple of smart saves to help ensure that long-awaited first home win was secured.

This was also our first league double of the season as – with what turned out to be a nice degree of symmetry – we won 4-3 at Churchstoke back in October.

So, a morale-boosting win for all concerned and well done to everyone who was involved.

There was no game for the Reserves this afternoon as they were not scheduled a fixture.
