A battling point on the road for the Reserves

Presteigne St Andrews FC’s disappointing cup form this season continued on Saturday, 31 October when they exited the Central Wales Cup at the first time of asking.

The fact it was a derby game against Radnor Valley probably made things worse in the eyes of most supporters, but well done to Steve Piggott and his side who left Llanandras Park with a 3-1 win.

I haven’t had any details as yet, but will add them in as soon as they become available.

But the Reserves came away from their Friday-night trip to Rhayader Town Reserves with a very creditable point from a 1-1 draw.

My thanks to Reserve-team boss Mark Weiland who has sent through his thoughts on his side’s showing at the Weirglodd.

‘Rhayader came out of the blocks quite fast and we had to weather the storm for the first 20 minutes,” said Mark.

“After that, we settled and got into the game and started knocking it about.

“Rhayader continued to have the possession but didn’t really create anything with a fair few of their shots going high and wide.

“The rain then came and so did a few hard and fair tackles with a couple of bookings although things did get a bit heated at various stages.

“It was 0-0 at half-time and we knew we had to go out and battle again in the second half especially as the pitch was by now very wet and heavy.

“10 minutes into the second half Rhayader swung in a corner and was headed in at the back post.

“We knew we couldn’t afford to drop our heads as they would more than likely put a few more past us.

“The next 20 minutes were fairly even with Rhayader hitting the post from 25 yards and us not really creating too many opportunities.

“With Rhayader in possession I nicked the ball in midfield and ran into their half hit before knocking it out out to Josh Carini on the right wing.

“He put in a hell of a cross to the back post for Duane Anning to finish and make it 1-1.

“It was a good last 15 minutes with Rhayader having most of the possession but we always looked dangerous on the break.

“With the pitch very heavy towards the end we dug in and defended excellently although the final whistle was a relief as we had some tired legs out there.

“This was one of our best performances of the season and every player’s effort was 100% tonight.

“It was an even better result as Rhayader had two, maybe three, first team players in as they didn’t have a game in the Cymru Alliance.

“This was another one of those games where I couldn’t pick a man of the match as everyone was class.

“To come to the side that is top of the league and earn a draw was a brilliant result.

“I think we deserved a point from the effort we put in but we will have to put in another big performance next week when we will travel to second-placed Brecon Town in the Emrys Morgan Cup.”
