The title race is boiling up for a good finish

The title race in the Spar Mid Wales League, first division is not yet over after the midweek action saw leaders, Knighton Town drop points while second-placed Penrhycoch kept up the pressure.

Knighton came away from Carno with a point from a 1-1 draw but, given Carno are third in the table, this was always likely to be one of the Robins’ tougher games of the run in.

Penrhyncoch must have been hoping Carno would do them a favour, but they still had to take full advantage by winning their game at mid-table Llanidloes Town.

There were to be no slip ups by Penrhyncoch who headed home with a 3-0 win –  a result that takes them to within five points of Knighton Town with two games in hand.

So, Knighton have two games to play – away at Machynlleth on Saturday, 23 April and then at home to Llanrhaeadr a week later.

But Penrhyncoch have four matches left, starting on Saturday, 23 April when they will host already-relegated Montgomery Town.

Knighton will be acutely aware that, as they had to go to Carno this week, so Penrhyncoch will have a similar trip on Monday, 25 April.

Only Knighton themselves have a better home record than Carno this season so it promises to be an interesting night on Monday.

Penrhycoch will then host Tywyn Bryncrug on Wednesday, 27 April before rounding off their programme at home to Hay St Mary’s on Saturday, 30 April.

So, three games in six days for Penrhyncoch which will determine both their and Knighton Town’s seasons – if both sides win all of their remaining games, then the title would go to Penrhyncoch by a single point.
