Presteigne St Andrews FC slipped to a 5-1 Spar Mid Wales League, second-division defeat against Borth United on Saturday, 25 February.

The game was switched to Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue ground and so the game was played on a 3G pitch.

Initially it didn’t seem as though this was affecting Presteigne too much as Matt Jones put the visitors ahead after only eight minutes.

But there’s a reason why Borth are challenging for promotion this season and they hit back to score two goals of their own to turn the game on its head.

Presteigne’s Owen Williams was then red-carded for a bad challenge and Borth added a third goal before the interval.

It was always likely to be tough after the break and so it proved as Borth went on to add two more goal to put a bit of gloss on the scoreline from their point of view.

But Presteigne never gave up and kept running and harrying the Borth players throughout that second period – a point not lost on the home side who gave Tom Ammonds’ side credit for the way in which they had stuck to the task.

Disappointing, then, for Presteigne, but the early signs are that the performance was way better than the result would suggest.

There are now only two league matches remaining for Presteigne, with the first of those scheduled for Saturday, 4 March in which we will host Churchstoke.
