My thanks to Andrew Williams for drawing my attention to an article on the official Tottenham Hotspur website that has strong local connections.

It details the life and career of goalkeeper Fred Griffiths who was born in Presteigne and who went on to play in the Football League for a number of clubs including Spurs.

Fred was among the hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops who died in the Third Battle of Ypres – also known as Passchendaele – in 1917.

You can read the article either by clicking here or on the image at the top of this article.

I am grateful to the Premier League club’s press office and the author of the article John Fennelly for permission to link to the article.

Fred Griffiths started out in local football before going on to play for no fewer than six league clubs.

He had retired from football by the time the First World War began – in fact, when he was killed in action on 30 October 1917 – Fred was 44 years old.

I am sure George Lancett will be able to give me more details on Fred’s life and times in Presteigne and it might well be that we further reflect on this at the end of October.
