Review of the weekend action

A League Cup exit but an encouraging showing from the first team

There were mixed fortunes for our two clubs over the weekend, but both management teams will take heart from encouraging performances.

The first team bowed out of the Spar Mid Wales League Cup when they went down 2-0 at home to old rivals, Knighton Town.

Former Presteigne player Danny Ives put Knighton ahead on the stroke of half-time after a game of ‘six-yard box pinball’ and Knighton then added a second after the break.

Presteigne were disrupted to some extent when goalkeeper Anthony ‘Rambo’ Vernalls was forced out of the action in the second half after picking up a knock in the first period, but the first team kept battling throughout and they certainly had their moments.

But this gave new recruit Matt Marlow his chance to impress when he came off the bench.

As for the Reserves, they were involved in an extraordinary game in their Mid Wales League (South) fixture at Hay St Mary’s Reserves.

Alan Stocker and Mark Weiland’s side fell behind early in the game but they turned it around to lead 2-1 by the break.

Nobody could have predicted what was to unfold after the break as the Reserves stepped it up to score seven more goals to run out 9-1 winners.

There will be a more detailed report from Mark Weiland to follow, but well done to the Reserves who would have had the historians going through the record books to find out the last time a Presteigne side rattled nine goals past an opponent.
