High drama at St Harmon

My thanks to Reserve-team manager Alan Stocker who has sent me his thoughts on what was clearly a dramatic finale to the Mid Wales League (South) game at St Harmon on Saturday, 20 October.

“We were 3-1 down with five minutes to play,” said Alan.

”But Jack Brindley equalised with two headers – the last in the dying seconds of the game after a bombardment of corners from the ever-threatening dead ball of captain Tom Lewis.

“We had started the game very brightly with some excellent passing moves, creating several chances that we were unable to convert.

“Then, after 20 minutes, we lost our striker Terry Williams to injury – he had been at the heart of everything we did going forward.

”Unfortunately with what we had on the bench we could not replicate his physical arial presence and hold-up play and so the game became a much more even affair.

“St Harmon scored on the half-hour with Billy Hyett soon equalising for Presteigne after the home defence failed to clear from a corner.

“But St Harmon regained the lead with about five minutes of the first half remaining.

”Again, we started well in the second half having most of the ball and chances but some poor finishing meant we were unable to get back on level terms.

“They then scored an absolute beauty of a goal with their captain hitting a volley from 25 yards out in to the roof of the net.

“In all honesty I thought that would then be us finished as having that happen after controlling the game for such long periods would surely knock the wind out of the sails.

“But, no – we kept on pushing right to the end and the lads were well rewarded for there efforts equalising with last move of the game.”
