No joy for the first team at the seaside

Presteigne St Andrews FC were to return home from the Ceredigion coast empty-handed after they were beaten 4-3 by Aberystwyth University in their MMP with Norman Lloyd League, second-division fixture on Saturday, 2 February.

It looked for all the world as though Shaun Harris’ side was going to head home with a point to show for their efforts but the students came up with what proved to be the winning goal in the 89th minute.

The University side took the lead early on in this one when a ball was only half-cleared by Presteigne and this resulted in it being sent back with interest as the students scored with a neat 20-yard finish.

But Presteigne picked themselves up and went again and they were rewarded when Duane Anning was brought down inside the area and Tom Lewis scored from the spot.

Duane Anning then put Presteigne ahead only for the home side to level before the interval sending the sides into the dressing room all square at 2-2.

Duane then scored again to put Presteigne in front again while Shaun’s boys created other good chances.

But, as so often happens, when you don’t take them you are punished and Aber broke away to draw level at 3-3 with a fine curling shot.

Then came the killer blow in the final minute to deny the first team what many reportedly felt would have been a deserved point.

But we should congratulate Aberystwyth University for whom this was a first league win of the season.

Onwards and upwards – the first team will return to action on Saturday, 9 February when they’ll again be on the road.

They will head to Four Crosses for a game that is scheduled to kick off at 2.15pm.
