A tough one to take for John Haycox

Presteigne St Andrews suffered their first defeat of the Mid Wales Leauge (South) season when they went down 4-3 at Talgarth Town on Saturday, 11 September.

But the scoreline itself doesn’t tell half the story as John Haycox’s squad would have headed home wondering just how they hadn’t come away with something to show for their efforts.

You have to feel particularly sorry for Matt Strangwood who scored a hat-trick but who still ended up on the losing side.

For so long it was looking so good for Presteigne who led 2-0 at the break and appeared to be firmly on course for what would have been a second successive league victory.

When Matt Strangwood completed that hat-trick in the second half that looked even more likely as Presteigne now led 3-0.

But Talgarth Town are clearly made of strong stuff as they were soon on the score sheet themselves – and then they netted a second.

With their tails clearly now very much up, Talgarth obviously felt the comeback was very much on and they went on to level the game at 3-3.

From 3-0 up to drawing 3-3 was disappointing enough for Presteigne, but Talgarth were to have the final say as they netted a fourth to complete the dramatic fight back.

So, bitterly disappointing for John and his squad – but full credit to Talgarth Town for producing a terrific comeback.

Food for thought, then, for the Presteigne St Andrews squad as they prepare for Emrys Morgan Cup action on Saturday, 25 September when they will head to Aberystwyth University.

There was no game for CP Llanandras this weekend but they, too, will be in Emrys Morgan Cup action next weekend when they will host Rhayader Town Reserves – that game will be played on Friday, 17 September when the kick off will be at 7.30pm.
