Preview of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FCSpar Mid Wales League leaders Penparcau will have the chance to put three points between themselves and their main rivals Rhayader Town on Saturday 1 May when they will host Aberystwyth University.

But they will be taking nothing for granted after the students turned over third-placed Bow Street on their own ground during the week.

Rhayader Town don’t have a game – neither do Bow Street, although they will contest the League Cup final on Bank Holiday Monday in which they will meet Llansantffraid Village at Newtown’s Latham Park (kick off 6.00pm).

Other than Bow Street, only Aberystyth Town have an outside chance of muscling in on the title race, but even they would admit they now need snookers.   They certainly need to win their game at Waterloo Rovers on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Twyyn Bryncrug will host Carno in what has the makings of a decent game for the neutral while Llansantffraid Village will look to warm up for that League Cup final with a win at Hay St Marys.

Presteigne’s game at Newbridge should also be tasty, given the derby element, while most of the remaining interest in the day’s activities at this level is focused on the foot of the table.

Newtown Reserves will fancy their chances at home to struggling Caersws Reserves while Dolgellau host Llanfyllin Town.

There is now only one league game scheduled for Monday – Tywyn Bryncrug will host Aberystwyth University.   The Dolgellau-Penparcau match will now be played on Tuesday 4 May.

Meanwhile, the chase for the Mid Wales League (South) title is just as keen – Builth Wells lead Rhosgoch Rangers on goal difference with both clubs having five games remaining.

Rhos will know the outcome of Builth’s game at Hay St Marys Reserves before they kick off their match at Sennybridge – the game at Hay is due to kick off at noon.

In addition to Presteigne Reserves’ home game against Rhayader Town Reserves and CP Llanandras’ trip to Newcastle, there are plenty of other interesting games, including third-placed Llandrindod Wells’ trip to Knightont Town.

Elsewhere, Talgarth Rovers will host Penybont Athletic while out of sorts Llandrindod Wells Colts will make one of their shorter trips of the season to Newbridge Reserves – I don’t know for certain, but this may be kicking off later as Presteigne St Andrews are due at Newbridge in a Spar Mid Wales League game that is due to kick off at 2.00pm.

In the day’s other games, Penybont United will take on Builth Wednesdays while Radnor Valley will head to bottom side St Harmon.
