Berriew profit from Llanrhaeadr postponement

Presteigne St Andrews FCBerriew march on at the top of the Spar Mid Wales League first division table but they were made to work hard in their game at Llansantffraid Village before eventually coming through 3-2.

Llanrhaeadr’s scheduled trip to Dolgellau fell victim to the wet weather, so Berriew are six points clear at the top, although they have played four more matches than Llanrhaeadr.

Carno came away from Aberystwyth University with a 2-0 win and so consolidated third spot, while Llanidloes Town are up to fourth place after they beat visiting Newbridge 2-1.

Tywyn Bryncrug were in good form – they stuck four answered goals past a Builth Wells side that made the long trip north, all of which means Presteigne St Andrews are within three points of second-bottom Dyffryn Banw after the 3-3 draw against Waterloo Rovers at Llanandras Park.

The heavy rain that initially threatened Presteigne’s game wasn’t exclusive to the east side of Wales, as Dyffryn Banw’s game at Penparcau was also called off.

The second division leaders Tregaron Turfs were held to a 0-0 draw at Aberaeron and so relinquished top spot to Montgomery Town who were 3-1 winners at Bont – Monty are top on goal difference.

Third-placed Rhosgoch Rangers didn’t play, but Kerry – who started the day in fourth spot – missed the chance to close the gap on the leading clubs as they lost 3-1 at Llanfair United.

At the foot of the table, Meifod’s wretched season continues, although they must have thought they were in with a shout of adding to their solitary point in the home game against Llanfyllin Town, but the away side took the spoils after a 3-2 victory.

Talgarth Town eased their relegation fears with an important 4-0 home victory over Abermule – that win lifts Talgarth above yesterday’s opponents to fourth-bottom in the table.

In the Mid Wales League (South), and after 17 straight league wins Rhayader Town Reserves are threatening to go through the entire season with a 100 percent record – Bronllys were the latest side to have a go at ending that record, but Rhayader left Breconshire with a 4-0 victory.

In any other season, Newcastle would surely be nailed on for the title – their 4-1 win at Builth Wells Reserves keeps them in second place with a record of 14 wins and a draw from 16 matches.

Knighton Town are still tracking the leaders in third courtesy of their 4-0 win at Hay St Marys, while it was a good day for Knighton clubs all round as Victoria beat Penybont 2-1 at Bryn-y-Castell.

Radnor Valley put the disappointments of last weekend’s defeat at St Harmon firmly behind them by putting Sennybridge to the sword at New Radnor – 6-2 the margin in that one – a result that sees Sennybridge sink to the bottom of the pile.

This is largely because St Harmon – a side that had shipped well over 100 goals and had only one win eight days ago – made it two home league victories in as many games by beating Presteigne Reserves 2-1.

The Swifts have climbed off the bottom and are three points clear of both Bronllys and Sennybridge – given Rhayader’s domination at the top of the table, the scrap to finish clear of bottom spot is looking far more interesting.
