Round up of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FCLlanrhaeadr kept up the pressure on the Spar Mid Wales League first division leaders Berriew as they put an end to Builth Wells recent improved league form by coming away from Lant Field with a 4-1 success.

Despite spending much of the past few weeks playing catch up due to an horrendous backlog of games, Llanrhaeadr have kept their nerve and have now moved to within four points of Berriew over whom they have three games in hand.

Third-placed Carno were held to a 1-1 draw at Tywyn Bryncrug while Llanidloes Town stay fourth and Llansantffraid Village fifth after both won away from home – Llanidloes were 1-0 victors at Waterloo Rovers while the Villagers came away from Bow Street with a 4-2 success.

Presteigne St Andrews’ 5-2 home win over Penparcau means they have cut the gap on second-bottom Dyffryn Banw to five points.

The day’s other match proved to be one to forget for Newbridge as they were thumped 5-0 at Dolgellau who climb two places to tenth in the table as a result of that win.

In division two, congratulations to Montgomery Town who are champions after they came away from Talgarth Town with a 5-1 win as the top three sides each collected the three points on offer.

Second-placed Tregaron Turfs are nine points behind the leaders and have played a game more – they are playing for second place as they can’t overhaul Montgomery Town as Tregaron have only two games left.

Rhosgoch Rangers were also on good form – they beat visiting Bont 5-0 at Crow Lane and could finish second as they have four games remaining and are only five points behind Tregaron.

The day’s other match at this level resulted in more misery for Meifod – the league’s bottom side has only one point to its name and they were beaten 4-1 at home by Abermule.

In the Mid Wales League (South), the top three sides all won – Rhayader Town Reserves were Friday-night victors at Builth Wells Reserves where they won 2-1.

This ensured they maintained their five-point advantage over second-placed Knighton Town who beat Talgarth Town Reserves at Bryn-y-Castell – Knighton have played a game more than both Rhayader and third-placed Newcastle.

If Hay St Marys headed to south Shropshire hoping that Newcastle’s recent dropping of points offered them hope, then they were to be seriously disappointed as they came away on the wrong end of a 11-0 result.

Elsewhere, Penybont were 3-2 winners over Knighton Victoria in a mid-table encounter at the Racecourse while Sennybridge remain bottom after they went down 7-0 at Newbridge Reserves.

The ‘bridge are level on points with Bronllys – whose scheduled home match against Presteigne Reserves was called off due to a lack of pitch – but their goal difference stands at minus-123, and so Sennybridge remain rooted to the foot of the table.
