A positive end to the New Year?

Presteigne St Andrews FC
The third of five games between the clubs this season

That time of year is coming when many of us will promise faithfully to change things in the coming 12 months – whether that be by losing weight, doing more exercise, drinking less, all of the above or, indeed, none of the above.

But before we head into 2012, Presteigne St Andrews FC will be looking to end 2011 on a high note by exacting a little revenge for their Boxing Day defeat at old rivals Knighton Town.

Given the way the league season has generally gone so far, there would have been more than a few Presteigne supporters fearing the worst when Trevor Gummer’s side headed over the hill to the ‘old enemy’ but, despite losing the game 2-0, the general view was that Presteigne had acquitted themselves pretty well at the league leaders.

So, Saturday, 31 December will see the sides head back to Llanandras Park for the second helping and Presteigne and their supporters will be hoping this proves the day when they at least go some way towards redressing the balance.

After a heavy defeat in the Radnorshire Cup quarter-final which was disappointing, there was also a home defeat for Presteigne in the second division league cup about which few people – especially me – actually care, although I did see that game and Knighton were deserved winners.

The league game at Bryn-y-Castell made it three wins from Knighton’s point of view and, with an Otway Cup semi-final tie to come, Trevor Gummer and his side side will be determined to avoid a whitewash at the hands of their local rivals.

The kick off at Llanandras Park will be at midday and a larger-than-average crowd is expected for the game – so don’t leave it too late if you want a parking space!

Admission will be £2.50 for adults, £1.50 for senior citizens and £1.00 for youngsters under the age of 16.
