Round up of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FC
A tough day on the road

Presteigne St Andrews FCThe FAW Trophy led the way in the weekend just gone although, for Presteigne St Andrews FC, this was to prove the beginning and the end of the road in this competition this season as we lost out 3-1 at home to Berriew.

Elsewhere, in no particular order of things, Dyffryn Banw eased through to the next round with a 4-2 home win over Llanfyllin Town, and Four Crosses beat visiting Bow Street 3-1.

Machynlleth enjoyed a 3-0 away win at Kerry, while Tywyn Bryncrug beat visiting Llandrindod Wells 2-1.  Sadly, two Spar League clubs scratched from the competition – Talgarth Town pulled out of their tie at Welshpool Town, while Montgomery Town withdrew from their tie at Barmouth and Dyffryn United.

In the Spar Mid Wales League, division one, Carno took full advantage of Berriew’s involvement in the FAW Trophy to move level on points with them at the top of the table.

Carno came away from Aberaeron with a 1-0 win and, in doing so, leapfrogged their hosts in the league table – Aberaeron are now third.

There were two other games at this level – Llanfair United missed the chance to close the gap on the leading clubs as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Waterloo Rovers.

At the bottom of the table, it is now eight defeats from eight games for Dolgellau who went down 4-2 at home to Llansantffraid Village.

In the second division, Rhosgoch Rangers were the big winners of the day as they came away from Newbridge with all three points courtesy of a 7-1 victory.

This win was enough to take Rhos up to second in the table – a point  above Presteigne St Andrews who are now third, and a point behind the leaders, Knighton Town.

Hay St Marys took a point from their trip to Knighton after that game ended in a 1-1 draw while,  in the day’s other game, Abermule beat visiting Bont 4-0.

Abermule are now fifth but it is very tight as only three points covers the top-five clubs – so the top half of the table.

In the Mid Wales League (South), Rhayader Reserves are two points clear at the top of the table after they saw off visiting Talgarth Town Reserves 3-0 at the Weirglodd.

Rhayader’s second string is two points clear of Llanidloes Town Reserves, who didn’t play a league game at the weekend, while third-placed Sennybridge’s match at Newcastle was abandoned after 70 minutes.

The game stood at 1-1 at the time but presumably will have to be replayed, although I am assuming the League will make some sort of ruling on this.

Penybont are moving quietly into contention – they are fourth in the table, four points off the pace but with a game in hand after they were 1-0 winners at Builth Wells Reserves.

At the foot of the table, Radnor Valley remain the only side in the division without a win after they were beaten 4-0 at home by Presteigne Reserves.
