Presteigne Juniors Under 17s rounded off 10 years as a squad with victory in the final of the Edwin Traylor Cup when they beat Leominster Minors 3-1 at Llanandras Park on Sunday, 17 May.

Joint-manager Haydn Williams has kindly sent through his thoughts on the team’s performance.

“The Under 17s team lifted the cup with a fine display against a dogged Leominster side.

“Kai Dayas opened the scoring with a great header from one of a number of superb corners.

“Soon afterwards another fine cross from Justin was headed home by Josh Gardner and Presteigne continued to push.

“But they escaped after a close shave when Kai sliced a clearance that looped over Will Tyler and came back off the bar before being scrambled away.

“The Leominster keeper was in fine form and kept Presteigne at bay with several fine saves.

“Leominster changed formation in the second half but it served only to help us out as it gave Owen Williams and Josh Griffiths more time to boss the midfield.

“Leominster got a goal back against the run of play with a neat finish.

“Almost immediately we restored our two-goal cushion when Owen laid the ball wide left to Justin who fed Josh Griffiths.

“He played it out wide right to Luke Saunders who placed it on a plate for the on rushing Josh Griff who slammed it home.

“We went close again several times and played some great football in the second half with Tom Crichton having a very solid half up front with danger man Josh Gardner.

“The defence were superb throughout and will made a couple of smart saves.

“Fair play to Leominster who never gave up and played their part in a very good final played in a good spirit.

“Many thanks to the Football Club, Edward Traylor, and Tracy Hammond who prepared a fine pitch.

“Also many thanks to Sue, Heidi, Carolyn, Jo, Roy and Alun for preparing a great spread afterwards.

“This was the end of an era and the lads did us proud, they even turned up all dressed up too – suffice to say, wild celebrations followed!”
