A frustrating week all round
Presteigne St Andrews FC
A winning start for the first team

Congratulations to Presteigne St Andrews FC’s first team squad who opened up their Spar Mid Wales League, second-division programme with a 3-2 win at Talgarth Town on Saturday, 12 August.

Presteigne dominated the first half and created countless chances but Tom Crichton’s early goal was all they had to show for their efforts.

My thanks to Tom Ammonds who has sent over some details of Saturday’s game – I would loved to have been there but unfortunately work got in the way.

Tom Crichton put us in front with a header from a Joel Layton corner,” said Tom..

“I am not kidding you when I say we must have had 20-30 chances in the first half but poor finishing could have proved costly.

“It threatened to look that way as Talgarth scored bang of half time with their first attack.

“The second half was exactly the same – chance after chance and you had that feeling we would get punished.

“Sure enough, we did as a long ball over the top caught us out and the striker slipped the ball under Simon Hamer to give Talgarth a 2-1 lead.

“We then hit the bar and the post and the travelling supporters were beginning to believe this was not going to go our way.

“But Josh Gardner then produced a moment of quality with a thunder bolt of a right-foot shot after cutting in from the left-hand side  – he hit it from around 25 yards into the top corner.

“Still buzzing from this we kept the pressure on and man-of-the-match Jack Biggs on debut produced another piece of really quality as he took on two or three defenders before curling the ball into the top corner from around 30 yards to give us a 3-2 lead.

“We saw the game out quite well but on another day we could easily have scored 10.

“[Manager] Shaun [Harris] was white as a sheet as he came across the pitch!

“Personally I would say that, had this happened last year, we wouldn’t have got anything out of the game.

“But credit where credit is due, the lads continued to play and got theirrewards with the first three points of the season.”
