Another game is called off at Llanandras Park

Presteigne St Andrews Under 18s were due to host Westfields in a HFA Floodlit Youth League fixture at Llanandras Park on Monday 31 January, but the overnight frost has put paid the game.

Temperatures dropped to around minus-eight degrees in the Presteigne area overnight and the pitch was white over first thing this morning.

While the initial frost has largely gone from the playing surface by around 11.30am, the ground underneath was still rock hard and club chairman Alan Randell was left with a straightforward decision to call off the game.

“It is still really hard underneath and there is unlikely to be sunshine for long enough to make much of an impact,” he said.

“Even if the frost did start to come out of the ground it’s likely we will get further sub-zero temperatures as soon as the sun goes down this evening.

“If we had opted to let the game go on, then there is a very good chance that the referee might well have called it off as soon as he arrived tonight, so the sensible move was to save Westfields a wasted journey,” he added.

The Under 18s are next due in action on Monday 7 February when they will host Wellington at Llanandras Park in the second round of the Giantkillers Cup.
