Round up of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FCIn the Spar Mid Wales League, first division the big winners at the top were Llanidloes Town who put down a fairly impressive marker on Friday night.

The Daffs opened up a four-point gap at the top as they thrashed Tywyn Bryncrug 9-1 under the Llanidloes lights and so their fellow title hopefuls would have taken to the field on Saturday afternoon knowing they were playing catch up.

But the main protagonists were unable to rise to the challenge – Four Crosses remain second, but they went down 4-2 at home to Montgomery Town while third-placed Builth Wells drew 0-0 at Berriew.

Aberaeron, who are fourth, also missed out on the chance to close the gap as they went down 4-3 at Welshpool Town, but there were wins for both Waterloo Rovers and Llansantffraid Village.

Waterloo were 2-0 victors in their game at second-bottom Dyffryn Banw, while basement side Dolgellau were on the wrong end of a 6-0 result at Llansantffraid.

Division One’s other game saw Aberystwyth University run 3-1 winners at home to Newbridge.

In the second division, Llanfair United’s lead at the top has been cut to a single point after they were held 3-3 by Presteigne St Andrews at Llanandras Park and Llandrindod Wells took a leaf out of Llanidloes Town’s book by going to Machynlleth and hammering the home side 9-1.

Knighton Town have blown hot and cold this season, but they were on a ‘warm’ day on Saturday as they won 3-1 at third-placed Kerry. Knighton are now fifth in the table – one place below Hay St Mary’s who were 2-1 winners at Talgarth Town.

The day’s other two matches at this level ended all square – Rhosgoch Rangers and Abermule shared four goals at Crow Lane, while it finished 1-1 at Llanfyllin Town who were hosting Bont.

In the Mid Wales League (South), it is starting to look like a two-horse race between Penybont – who didn’t play – and Builth Wells Reserves who closed the gap to two points by coasting to a 10-0 home win over Radnor Valley.

Newcastle remain in third, but their hopes of retaining their title are fading fast – they were beaten 2-1 at Newbridge Reserves and the Shropshire club is 10 points off the pace. Presteigne Reserves picked up a point from a 2-2 draw at Brecon Town.

Bronllys remain in touch after they won 2-1 at Llandrindod Wells Reserves while the day’s other two scheduled matches were postponed – Bucknell were due to host Sennybridge, while Talgarth Town Reserves were due to be at Llanidloes Town Reserves.
