‘Silly 10 minutes’ costs first team dear

Presteigne St Andrews bowed out of the FAW Trophy at the first hurdle when they were beaten 3-1 by visiting Berriew on Saturday, 28 September.

This was always likely to be a tough game as Berriew had started the season well in the Spar League, division one, but Presteigne were in the game up until half-time.

My contacts suggest we more than played our part in the first 45 minutes at Llanandras Park although the sides went in 0-0 at the break.

But what has been described as a ‘silly 10-minute spell after half-time’ was ultimately to determine the outcome of this one as Berriew netted three times in this period to effectively take the game away from the home side.

Lee Sutton did give Presteigne hope when he pulled back a goal with around 25 minutes remaining, but this was to be as good as it got for the home side.

The early suggestions are that we were right in the game during that first half but, over the full 90 minutes, the result was probably about right.

No doubt the squad will reflect on the individual errors that were to cost the squad dear, but similarly manager Danny Williams will be keen for them to put this game behind them quickly and move on.

As for the Reserves, they bounced back well after last weekend’s first defeat of the season at Llanidloes Town Reserves as they came away from Radnor Valley with all three points from their Mid Wales League (South) fixture.

Two goals apiece from Duane Anning and Oliver Jones saw Mark Weiland’s side through to a convincing 4-0 win in this one.

I will add in more details on both matches as and when they come to hand but thanks to Alan Randell (and Danny Evans who shouted the Reserves’ details to Alan!) for the information so far.
