Ressies run riot at Radnor

My grateful thanks to the Ressies’ player-manager Mark Weiland for submitting his thoughts on his side’s excellent 4-0 win at Radnor Valley in their Mid Wales League (South) game on Saturday, 28 September.

Essentially, ‘Weedo’ felt this had been a job very well done by his team, although he admitted they had had to weather an early Radnor storm.

“Radnor were quick out the blocks and put us under pressure first 15 minutes in which they didn’t give us any time on the ball so we had to result in playing it long,” said Mark.

“To be honest it worked as, from one of these long balls forward, Alan Stocker picked out Duane Anning who scored to put us in front.

“OJ [Oliver Jones] scored our second after good build up play – OJ hit a left-foot shot which went in off the post.

“We then scored a third goal just before half-time when another through ball, this time from Robin Baker, fell to Duane, who coolly lobbed the Radnor keeper Will Fowden.

“As we were 3-0 up at the break, the first 1o minutes of the second half was always going to be important and we battled well.

“As the second half went on gaps appeared in the Radnor defence and OJ was on hand to score his second – this time he lobbed the goalkeeper.

“Radnor thought there should have been an offside decision, but Duane Anning was clearly not interfering with play.

“That was pretty much ‘game over’ then, really – Radnor had a few counter-attacks late on, but these rarely troubled goalkeeper Trevor Gummer.

“We had more chances – OJ could have completed his hat-trick, while Duane Anning could have done likewise, but his shot came back off the post.

“Spencer Napolitano nearly scored on his return, but overall it was good to bounce back with three points after a disappointing result at Llani last week.

“I am sure that if we were to have everyone available every week then we are more than capable of challenging at the top of the Mid Wales League (South).

“OJ and Duane were the difference today – their pace ripped Radnor’s defence apart, while Richard Wilding was solid at the back and John Crawley was again class.

“It was  also good to have Spencer [Napolitano] back after a bad injury to his knee – he wanted 15 minutes at the end to ease him back in.

“At the moment looking at the league, I think any side from us upwards in the table has a chance of winning it.”
