Presteigne St Andrews FC’s members face a busy weekend as they are supporting the town’s first-ever Relay for Life.

The event is being held on the John Beddoes School field and is raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Alan Stocker and Mark Weiland appeared to be loosely in charge of the Football Club team who are facing the prospect of a 24-hour relay walk around a track set up on the field for the event.

Credit to Mick Fryer and his committee – the whole event appears to be very well organised considering there is a committee of only seven involved in the bulk of the organisation.

There was a warm-up event involving lots of stretching exercises prior to the start of the event at midday on Saturday, 12 July.

I am glad to report that none of the Football Club team appeared to go down with a hamstring strain during the warm up so that, at least, bodes well for the coming season.

There was a familiar figure on the microphone doing his best to coordinate things ahead of the ‘kick off’ – one Mr Alan Randell was taking centre stage in an effort to get things to run smoothly.

The first lap of the 24 hours was undertaken by a host of cancer ‘survivors’ as they call themselves and the teams taking part stood inside the track and applauded them all as they completed their lap – a very nice touch.

It was announced just prior to the start that Presteigne’s Relay for Life had already raised £15,000 – a really good effort and well done to everyone who has played their part in that.

So, it is ‘best foot forward’ for the teams over the next 24 hours – Mark Weiland and Drewe Williams took the first few laps for the Football Club team.

They were dribbling a football around the track in those early laps, although it remains to be seen if they are showing similar levels of enthusiasm at around 11.00am on Sunday morning.

If you are in the area, why not pop down to the John Beddoes School field and support both our team and the event as a whole?

There are a number of fundraising sideshows that would love to part you from your hard-earned change, while you could win a trial flight from Shobdon on the Football Club stand.

Once again, well done to everyone who is involved – it’s good to see the club playing its part in supporting what is a great cause.
