Bad day at Black Rock….

Presteigne St Andrews FC
Friday night at Rhayader for the Reserves

Presteigne St Andrews FCIt was to prove a bitterly disappointing day all round for Presteigne St Andrews FC on Saturday, 23 August as both the first team and the Reserves slipped to defeats.

As has been well documented, the club was victim of circumstances in that we were unaware until relatively late in the day that the first team was due to go to Bont for a Spar Mid Wales League, second division fixture.

This might have played some part in Jamie Allen's side going down 3-1 in this game – certainly the fact he was without five players who had arranged to do other things as they were under the impression there was no game.

Apparently, Presteigne had their chances in the first half and could have been two or three goals up, but these went begging and instead Bont went in a goal to the good.

Manager Jamie Allen admitted the second half play was pretty much reflected in the scoreline that saw Bont win the half 2-1 and the game 3-1.

Tom Ammonds scored the Presteigne consolation goal with a 25-yard effort around five minutes from time, but the damage was done by then as Bont were leading 3-0.

As for the Reserves, they had to give up a number of players to supplement the first-team squad while they also ran into a strong-looking Carno Reserves side at Llanandras Park.

Carno ran out 6-1 winners in this one and, while pleased his largely young side tried to play football through to the end of the game, manager Mark Weiland admitted their defensive frailties had been exposed, especially in the first half.

Carno Reserves led 4-0 at the interval and then added a further goal in the second half before the Ressies got one on the board courtesy of an Alan Stocker free kick.

There will be reaction from both managers online in the next few days – bear in mind I am working through the weekend, so it might take a while. I know, what I can now see is the world's smallest violin, so, no sympathy there, then!

Both managers and their squads could have been forgiven for thinking what might have been if they had been able to field their full sides for this one – and that is to take nothing away from either Bont or Carno Reserves.

Apparently, Bont were also unaware they were due to be playing us until fairly late in proceedings – suffice to say, we shall be making the point loud and clear to the league's officials.
