The Reserves ran Rhayader close

Presteigne Reserves went down 2-1 against Rhayader Town Reserves in their Mid Wales League (South) fixture at Llanandras Park on Wednesday, 1 April.

But it took a 30-yard wonder strike to deny Mark Weiland’s side what many on the ground believed would have been a deserved point.

My thanks to Tom Ammonds for supplying a report on the evening’s entertainment.

“Presteigne took lead inside the first minute after a slick counter attacking move with Kai Dayas releasing Shaun Prince who squared the ball for Duane Anning to tap in at the far post.

“Liam Hill in the Presteigne goal, who had an excellent goal all night, kept Rhayader at bay and Presteigne went into the break 1-0 to the good.

“The second half was pretty much the same with some hefty tackles going in from both sides.

“Duane Anning had a goal disallowed for offside and this proved to be the decisive as Rhayader continued to press and finally got a break after Liam made a smart save.

“Unfortunately it fell straight to their striker who finished it off from around six yards.

“It looked as if the game was going to end in a draw, which many in attendance thought would have been a fair result, until a wonder strike from around 30 yards beat Liam with only minutes remaining.

“Presteigne tried in vain for the equaliser but it was not to be as Rhayader closed out the game and won 2-1.

“Both teams tried to play football on a difficult surface because of the weather but credit to the groundsman and his team.

“I was very impressed with Liam and the two Under 17’s in centre midfield – Owen Williams and Kai Dayas – who proved the step up to adult football is certainly possible for the Under 17’s.”
