First team and Reserves both pick up draws

A point apiece for the first team and Reserves

Presteigne St Andrews FC battled out a 0-0 draw with Llansantffraid Village in their Spar Mid Wales League, second-division match at Llananadras Park on Saturday, 27 August.

But, as they say, there are nil-nils and nil-nils and this was one of the more eventful ones.

Both sides had their chances in this one, not least from the penalty spot as both sides missed out from 12 yards.

Presteigne had the first chance – Danny Evans’ spot kick went begging, while Llansantffraid were also unsuccessful.

Their penalty came as a result of one of the saves of the day – sadly, it was Presteigne defender John Cawley who turned the ball on to the bar with his hand leading to the inevitable red card.

But, in the end, it was a price worth paying as the 10 men battled on to secure a point from the draw.

Presteigne manager Tom Ammonds was pleased with his side’s performance levels, but admits they need to be far more clinical in the attacking third of the field.

“We missed a few chances in the first half and obviously we need to be improving in this area,” he said.

“But, again, I couldn’t fault the effort and work rate of the players and the point we gained is another step in the right direction.

“While you never like to have a player sent off, I have no problem with John Cawley as it was an instinctive reaction and he effectively took one for the team,” he added.

Congratulations to the Reserves who came away from Rhayader Town Reserves with a very fine point from a 1-1 draw.

Spencer Morgan was on target for the Ressies who were in front in this one, but the home side hit back to square the game.

But this was one of those games when you would certainly have taken a point ahead of kick off, as Rhayader Reserves are very likely to be up there in the Mid Wales League (South) title race.

So, well done to Dale and his squad on a very encouraging start – and here’s hoping they can use this as a foundation on which to build in the coming games.
