It was to be a disappointing night at Llanandras Park

Presteigne St Andrews FC’s difficult season continued on Wednesday, 30 October when they were beaten 8-2 by Waterloo Rovers in their ER Jenkins Cup tie at Llanandras Park.

Waterloo took an early lead in this one and, when they then doubled their advantage it had the makings of a very long evening for the home side.

But, to their credit, the home side hit back with a cracking goal from Fin Özsoylu who headed home a right-wing corner.

Had Presteigne held out until half-time then it might have been a different game but Waterloo regained their two-goal advantage before the interval.

In the third quarter of the game Rovers ensured they would be heading back to Montgomeryshire with all three points as they scored two more quick goals to open out a 5-1 lead.

But then, once again, Presteigne showed just what they are capable of with a fine counter-attacking goal that took them the full length of the field.

Jaron Vaughan still had plenty to do when the ball eventually found itself through to him, but he produced a very calm finish to chip the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 5-2.

But this was as good as it got for the home side as Waterloo then closed out the game by netting a further three goals for an 8-2 victory.

The frustrating thing for the home side was that Presteigne scored arguably the two best goals of the night but the flip side was that almost all of Waterloo’s goals came from less than 10 yards out.

Liam Tomkins in the Presteigne goal did his best and made a number of good saves but too often he was left exposed and had little chance with the majority of the Waterloo goals.

This is to take nothing away from the visitors – Waterloo were very good value for their victory and we wish them all the best for the remainder of the competition.
