Presteigne St Andrews Football Club and Presteigne Cricket Club will have new trophies to present after they took delivery of the Dennis Lancett Memorial Shields which are to be presented to their improving younger players.

Dennis Lancett played football and cricket for the town during the 1950s and 1960s and on his death the family was keen to mark his playing career by presenting memorial shields to the town’s clubs.

“Dennis always enjoyed his sport and particularly his time playing for his home-town clubs so this seemed a very suitable way of remembering him,” said his widow Phyllis.

“I am delighted to present the shields on behalf of the family and we hope they will help encourage young sporting talent with the Presteigne area,” she added.

Club chairman Alan Randell received the shield on behalf of Presteigne St Andrews FC.

“It was very good of the family to remember the club in this way and I am delighted to accept the shield on behalf of the club,” he said.

“It will be presented in tandem with our Most Improved Player Award which is handed out at the annual dinner,” he added.

Receiving the cricket club’s shield, Trevor Owens said the award would also go towards rewarding the rising talent within its ranks.

“As with the Football Club we are very pleased to accept this shield and are delighted that Dennis chose to remember his home-town clubs in this way,” he said.

“We have a number of rising stars within our Sunday side who will be pushing for places in the league team next season so there is bound to be strong competition for the shield when it comes to the presentation evening.”
