Two new sides in the ‘South’

Presteigne St Andrews FC
The Reserves will face fresh opposition in the coming season

Stuart Skidmore’s Presteigne Reserves squad will face new opposition in the Mid Wales League (South) in the 2011-12 season.

The league’s Annual General Meeting accepted entries from Bucknell and Brecon Town while they also rubber-stamped the name change of Knighton Victoria to Knighton Town Reserves.

The decision of the Bryn-y-Castell club to change the name to their Reserves was no great shock – their first team will be in the Spar Mid Wales League, second division next season so it made sense as they would otherwise have had to transfer players from Victoria if they were needed by the first team.

Bucknell are no strangers to the Mid Wales League (South) – they were perennial competitors in the league until a couple of years ago when they left to join the Herefordshire League.

But the south Shropshire club has decided to revert back to Mid Wales League football for the coming campaign and for those of us who enjoyed games against them over the years it is good to see Bucknell back.

As for Brecon Town, this is a bit more surprising as it must have been a toss up between the Mid Wales League (South) and south Wales football in terms of travelling distances – after all, it is a fair step from Brecon to St Harmon or Rhayader.

But they will have reasonably local matches against Sennybridge and Bronllys among others, so maybe this played a part in their thinking and they, too, will be welcomed into the league – another new ground to visit.

The Mid Wales League (South) plans to run with 16 clubs this season and as soon as the fixtures are published, they will be posted on this site.
