Changes at the top of the Spar League first division

Presteigne St Andrews FCMontgomery Town have taken over at the top of the Spar Mid Wales League, first division after they took full advantage of Rhayader Town slipping up on Boxing Day.

Rhayader led the table at Christmas, but they were well beaten 4-1 at Llanidloes Town while Montgomery Town thumped visiting Berriew 7-1 in a Montgomeryshire derby game.

This means Monty have a two-point lead over Rhayader with a game in hand while Llanidloes’ impressive victory over the Weirglodd side means they are third in the table, nine points behind Rhayader with two games in hand.

Those local football fans who have been talking about a changing of the natural order of things in the Welshpool area would have more ammunition for their argument after Waterloo Rovers produced the result of the day as they hammered Welshpool Town 10-1 in the derby game.

Waterloo are fourth while Welshpool are only a point of the bottom of the table with bottom side Aberystwyth University having four games in hand over them.

The day’s other game saw Llansantffraid Village beat Dyffryn Banw 3-1 at home, while the Christmas Eve fixture saw Carno see off visiting Bow Street 2-1.

In the second division, Knighton Town’s 2-0 home win over Presteigne St Andrews means the Bryn-y-Castell side has a five-point lead at the top as second-placed Four Crosses surprisingly went down 1-0 at home to Llanfyllin Town.

Aberaeron are third in the table – they were 1-0 home winners over Llandrindod Wells on Tuesday, 27 December while Kerry are fourth in the table courtesy of a 3-0 victory at Abermule.

Rhosgoch Rangers must be ruing their poor start to the season as they have certainly come good in the last few months – they thrashed Talgarth Town 7-0 at Crow Lane and are up to fifth in the table.

In the day’s other game, Aberdyfi and Machynlleth were involved in an eventful affair on the Ceredigion coast as they shared eight goals in a 4-4 draw.
