Round Up of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FCThe Spar Mid Wales League title is surely Montgomery Town’s to lose after a weekend in which they extended their advantage at the top by a further point.

They are now nine points clear of their only serious title rivals Rhayader Town after Montgomery drew 0-0 at Newbridge, while Rhayader slumped to a shock 3-0 home defeat against Tywyn Bryncrug.

Newbridge will argue they are still very much in the hunt – they are in fifth place in the table, 20 points behind Montgomery but with seven games in hand.  Theoretically, of course, they could still do it, but realistically they can’t really afford to drop too many points on the run in.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Carno beat visiting Dolgellau 3-0, while Aberystwyth University picked up four points from six over the weekend – on Saturday they drew 1-1 at Dyffryn Banw before beating visiting Welshpool Town 2-0 on Sunday.

Welshpool remain bottom of the division – four points adrift of Banw, while the University are a further two points better off.

In Division Two, the smart money would probably be on Aberaeron for the title – they are second in the league after they thumped Knighton Town 6-0 at home.

Aberaeron have two games in hand over Llandrindod Town whom they trail by a point. Four Crosses and Llanfair United are breathing down third-placed Knighton’s necks – Four Crosses saw off visiting Tregaron Turfs 2-0 while Llanfair came away from Abermule with a 4-1 success.

Talgarth Town’s 6-1 win at Llanandras Park means they are in still in touch, but they are running out of games.

At the bottom, Meifod remain rooted to the foot of the table, although they did score three times at Aberdyfi – no mean feat as they have netted only 14 goals all season.  The problem was ‘dyfi netted six goals of their own

Bont are on the charge – they beat Kerry 6-2 at home and are now only two points behind Presteigne St Andrews with seven games in hand.

The day’s other game finished in a 2-2 draw between Rhosgoch Rangers and Llanfyllin Town at Crow Lane.

The League Cup quarter-finals saw four home wins – Builth Wells beat visiting Llansantffraid Village 1-0 at Lant Field while Machynlleth are into the last four after a 2-1 victory over Llandrindod Wells.

Waterloo Rovers got the better of Berriew in a Montgomeryshire derby game – Rovers won 2-0, whole earlier in the week Llanidloes Town beat Four Crosses by the same scoreline.

In the Mid Wales League (South), Newcastle are six points clear at the top after a thumping 5-0 home win over Penybont, while Builth Wells Reserves are up to second after they were 5-1 victors at St Harmon.

Hay St Marys lost ground – they drew 2-2 at Radnor Valley while Llandrindod Wells Reserves went down 2-0 at home to Bronllys.

Presteigne Reserves went down 3-1 at Knighton Town Reserves while Brecon Town beat Newbridge Reserves 4-1 to ensure the Villagers’ second-string side remain one place off the foot of the table.

The day’s other game saw Bucknell run out 3-0 winners at bottom side Talgarth Town Reserves.
