First team progress in the Welsh Cup

Presteigne St Andrews FC

Presteigne St Andrews FCPresteigne St Andrews FC are through to the next round of the Welsh Cup after a dramatic preliminary round win over Radnorshire rivals Newbridge at Llanandras Park on Saturday, 30 August.

Callum Matthews was the undoubted star of the show for Presteigne as he scored all four of the home side's goals to secure their passage through to the first round.

After the disappointing defeat at Bont last time out, manager Jamie Allen would have been looking for a positive response and outcome to this game and it appears as though this was exactly what he got.

Well done to everyone involved – it's always good to get through a few rounds of the premier cup competition we enter, so we can now all look forward to the draw for the next round and here's hoping we receive another home tie.

Once again, our thanks to Danny Evans for kindly sponsoring this game – it is much appreciated.

As for the Reserves, well, they are still looking for their first point of the Mid Wales League (South) season after they went down 3-1 at Rhayader Town Reserves.

Given the obvious defensive problems the side has endured in the opening three matches, there would have been some fearing the worst for Mark Weiland's side as they headed to the defending champions.

While it's obviously never great to lose any match, there would have been plenty of times over the years when a Reserve side would have come away from The Weirglodd on the wrong end of a much bigger defeat than that – I know, I played in a few of them…

Hopefully this game will prove something of a turning point for 'Weedo' and the Reserves – they will be off to Sennybridge next weekend.
