A home defeat for the first team

Presteigne St Andrews FC slipped to a 2-0 home defeat in their Spar Mid Wales League, second division derby game against Knighton Town at Llanandras Park.

The game did well to beat the weather but the pitch had hardly had time to cut up before Knighton went in front as they had a 1-0 lead after only 20 seconds.

It is still being debated as to whether or not a Presteigne player actually touched the ball before the visitors went in front, but either way, it was hardly the start the home supporters would have been looking for.

Knighton then doubled their lead shortly before the break when Simon Hamer in the Presteigne goal was adjudged to have brought down a Knighton player and the Robins made it 2-0 from the spot.

Presteigne did raise their game after the interval but the general view was that we could have few complaints on the day as Knighton were the better side over the 90 minutes and so were good value for their win.

It will be quick turn around for the sides as the return game is due to take place at Bryn-y-Castell on Saturday, 29 December when the kick off will be at 2.30pm.

Disappointing, then, for Presteigne for whom it has been a frustrating month with a double-defeat against a struggling Machynlleth side, and then today’s reversal at home.

But, in the midst of that, there was an excellent home point against Llanfair United – still we are the only side to have denied the second division leaders victory this season – work that out if you can!

Saturday’s match at Knighton Town will kick off at 2.30pm.
