Presteigne St Andrews FC are hoping to return to Spar Mid Wales League, second division action on Saturday, 2 February when they are due to host Aberdyfi at Llanandras Park.

The more observant among you will have noticed the opening sentence of this article has a large unwritten ‘but’ contained within it as things will very much depend on just how much rain we get overnight.

Club chairman Alan Randell said a deterioration in the weather in the Presteigne area on Friday afternoon means he is planning on organising a pitch inspection for Saturday morning.

“At midday today it was absolutely fine and there was no doubt at all the game would be going ahead,” said Alan.

“But it has rained pretty heavily this afternoon and, while that in itself might not cause too much of a problem, the issue is that rain is falling on already sodden ground.

“We have to get a referee in to take a look if we think the game is in any doubt so I am hoping to put Dave Bywater on stand by tonight in case when we need him first thing in the morning should we feel there is any doubt about it.

“We are keen to play as it seems a long time since we actually had a game at Llanandras Park but we do have to be mindful of the dangers of turning the pitch into a ploughed field in 90 minutes,” he added.

There is a heavy programme of games due at Llanandras Park in the coming week and, unless things dry up considerably in the coming days, Alan warns it’s unlikely they will all be played as scheduled.

“Clearly, if we can play the Aberdyfi match, then it will go ahead – that is our main priority – and we will be doing all we can to get that game on,” he said.

“But we are then due to host Aberystwyth University in a rearranged Central Wales Cup game on Tuesday night [5 February] so that would depend on how the pitch holds up and recovers from Saturday.

“Then, on Thursday [7 February] the Under 18s are due to take on Wellington, while next Saturday is currently an ‘either or’ situation in that we could either be at Rhosgoch Rangers or at home to Bont, so there could be another game scheduled for the pitch on 9 February.

“To be honest, given the amount of rain and snow we have had recently, you would have to say it is unlikely we would get away with four games in eight days.”

Any news of any pitch inspection will be posted on the website just as soon as it comes to hand.
