Round up of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FC
A tough day on the road

Presteigne St Andrews FCBerriew have regained top spot in the Spar Mid Wales League, first division as a result of thier 3-1 home win over Tywyn Bryncrug.

They are level on points with second-placed Carno – who have a game in hand – but Carno were on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline at Llandrindod Wells, who are up to third.

The Spa men have a 100 percent record and – with three games in hand over Berriew – they are only three points off the pace.

Llanfair United, Aberaeron and Waterloo Rovers all remain firmly in touch at the top – Llanfair were 4-2 winners at Welshpool Town on Friday evening while Aberaeron beat visiting Llansantffraid Village 3-1.

But the big winners of the weekend were Waterloo Rovers, who thrashed Bow Street 3-1 in Welshpool.

It is 11 defeats in 11 for bottom side Dolgellau, who went down 5-0 at Montgomery Town, but Dyffryn Banw have something to cheer about – they picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 success at Builth Wells.

In the day’s other game at this level, Aberystwyth University were 4-1 victors over visiting Four Crosses.

There was only one game in the second division in which Knighton Town took full advantage of playing at home – they thrashed visiting Newbridge 7-0 and have gone a point clear of Rhosgoch Rangers at the top.

But Rhos have two games in hand, while Presteigne St Andrews FC are third – but have played only four league matches.

There was no shortage of action in the ER Jenkins Cup – Presteigne were 2-1 winners at Talgarth Town, while – also in Pool A, Hay St Marys came away from Rhosgoch Rangers with a 3-2 success.

There was no shortage of goals in Pool B – Abermule beat visiting Kerry 5-4, while Machynlleth came away from Bont with an impressive 8-1 success.

In the Mid Wales League (South), Rhayader Reserves are three points clear at the top, but they were made to work hard for a 3-2 success at Bronllys, who are second-bottom of the table.

Llanidloes Town Reserves remain firmly in touch after they put away Talgarth Town Reserves 8-2, while Presteigne Reserves leapfrogged Penybont into third place after beating them 3-2 at Llanandras Park.

Incidentally, one long-serving supporter of Presteigne says Ieuan Crowe’s winning goal in that match was ‘the best goal he had ever seen at Presteigne’ – high praise, indeed!

Elsewhere in the ‘South’ on Saturday, Newcastle saw off visiting Builth Wells Reserves 3-1, while Radnor Valley are clearly starting to find their feet – their 2-o home win over St Harmon meant they completed a quick-fire double over the Swifts as they won 4-0 at St Harmon only a fortnight ago.
