Presteigne St Andrews FC are due to open 2014 with a Friday-night Central Wales Cup third-round tie against Llandrindod Wells at Llanandras Park on Friday, 3 January.

As mentioned in a previous post, this game is subject to a likely pitch inspection on Friday as the predicted rough weather overnight might lead to more heavy rain.

But, hopefully the worst of the weather will pass us by and the game will go ahead as scheduled as it is an attractive fixture with which to start the year.

One thing is for certain – this is likely to be one of the toughest tests Danny Williams and his side will have faced so far this season.

Llandrindod Wells were a strong side in the second division of the Spar Mid Wales League last season in which they finished runners-up to Llanfair United, and they have since gone from strength to strength.

Llan’dod top the first division with a one hundred percent record in the league of 14 wins from 14 games – enough to have them five points clear of Llanfair United in second place – obviously the second division was pretty strong last year!

They also enjoyed a fine run in the Welsh Cup in which they made it through to the third round before bowing out against Holywell Town at The Broadway.

Presteigne St Andrews will have to make changes – Joe Mayglothling and Brian Dyer have both left the club to join Kington Town, while Adam Farmer has departed for Knighton Town.

On Saturday, the Reserves will head into what could prove a season-defining month with a tricky looking away game at Penybont.

‘The Bont’ have been among the stronger sides in the Mid Wales League (South) for a number of years and they are fourth in the table as things stand – one place and one point better off than ‘Weedo’s’ Reserves team.

Obviously, both matches will be subject to the weather and it would be worth checking back on the website between now and kick off times on both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon at the Racecourse Ground.

Friday night’s match at Llanandras Park is scheduled to kick off at 7.30pm and the admission prices will be £2.50 for adults, £1.50 for senior citizens and £1.00 for youngsters under the age of 16.
