Mixed fortunes with which to round off September

No joy for the first team at Abermule

Presteigne St Andrews FC slipped to their sixth defeat in their last seven outings in all competitions when they were beaten 4-1 at Abermule on Saturday, 27 September.

It could have been so different, though, had they capitalised on a dream start to the game when Ioan Hughes put them ahead inside the first minute.

But Abermule regrouped and first got themselves back into the game with an equaliser before then taking the lead before the interval.

They then went on to make the game safe with two more goals after the break although Presteigne were again guilty of missing some good chances.

“Again, we had around half a dozen players unavailable for various reasons – some were on pre-planned weekends away,” said Tom Ammonds.

“On top of this, we are likely to be without Callum Matthews for some time as he has ankle ligament damage.

“Callum is due to return to hospital for more checks later this week when they will hopefully establish just what the problem is, but we may as well accept we’re going to be without him for some time,” added Tom.

But the Reserves at last have something to celebrate as they picked up their first win of the Mid Wales League (South) season.

Mark Weiland’s side beat visiting Talgarth Town Reserves 2-1 at Llanandras Park – a result that sees them climb off the foot of the table.

They are replaced there by Talgarth themselves, who are yet to pick up a point this season.

I am told Joe Haywood and Alan Stocker scored the Reserves’ gaols in this one, with Joe putting us in front only for Talgarth to level before the break.

Apparently the Reserves were not lacking in possession, pressure or corners, but they left it late as it was only five minutes from time when Alan popped up with the winner.

But well done to the Ressies – it’s been a long time coming and it’s just a shame they will now have to wait a fortnight for their next game as there will be no Mid Wales League (South) fixtures next weekend.
