Match abandoned at Llanandras Park

Presteigne St Andrews FC’s Spar Mid Wales League, second-division game was abandoned with 10 minutes remaining after a player from each side sustained a serious injury.

Bont were leading the game 1-0 courtesy of a goal that came around the hour-mark but – at 1-0 – Presteigne were still obviously very much in the match.

But an incident on 80 minutes led to the match official taking the correct decision to call off the game.

A Bont player was reportedly bearing down on the penalty area with Presteigne’s Neil Mills looking to get in a challenge.

I wasn’t there, but I am told Neil leaned into the attacker in an effort to dispossess him and, in doing so, knocked the Bont player off balance.

This led to his colliding with Presteigne’s keeper Simon Hamer – the Bont striker’s head hitting Simon’s leg.

Neil Mills was given a red card for his part in the incident, although I am told that it was generally accepted it was a genuine accident and there was nothing malicious in the challenge.

It was immediately clear the neither of the injured players was in great shape and so the match was abandoned while an ambulance was called.

Both players were eventually taken to Hereford’s County Hospital where it was later confirmed Simon Hamer had broken his leg.

The Bont player – whose name I don’t know – also reportedly underwent checks at hospital and, at the time of writing this, I am afraid I am not sure as to the extent of his injuries.

Everyone at Presteigne St Andrews FC wishes both Simon Hamer and the Bont player a speedy recovery, while we would also like to thank Amy Anning and others who helped care for the injured parties.
