Presteigne St Andrews FC will host old rivals Knighton Town in a Spar Mid Wales League, second division game on Boxing Day.

This game doesn’t usually require much building up as it is generally the one in any given season – alongside the return game at Bryn-y-Castell – that both sides are especially keen to win.

Knighton Town have had a very good season so far – they top the table and have lost only once in their opening 13 league games.

If you contrast this with the fact that Presteigne St Andrews are yet to win a home game in the league this season, then most casual punters would surely be beating a path to their friendly neighbourhood turf accountant to lump on an ‘away win’.

But, as we all know, strange things can happen in derby games and it’s to be hoped that Jamie Allen’s side can rise to the occasion on Friday afternoon.

There are grounds for optimism as, after a slow start to the season, the home side has found a bit of form in recent times and has got itself back in touch with those clubs in mid-table.

But we all know this is likely to be a very tough game and Knighton deserve credit for the way in which they have turned things around in recent seasons.

It wasn’t many years ago that CP Llanandras went to Bryn-y-Castell and beat Knighton Town courtesy of a Mark Ammonds hat-trick.

If someone had told me prior to that season that a Presteigne third team would beat Knighton’s first team I am not sure I would have necessarily believed them.

But, as I say, Knighton have steadied the ship since those days and certainly seem to be heading in the right direction this time around, so this should be a decent spectacle.

The kick off at Llanandras Park will be at 2.30pm and, for some reason, Sky and BT Sport have overlooked this one in their festive schedules so the only way to see it will be to get yourself down to Llanandras Park.

Admission prices for Friday’s game will be £2.50 for adults; £1.50 for senior citizens and £1.00 for youngsters under the age of 16.
