A tough home defeat for the first team

Presteigne St Andrews FC found Newbridge-on-Wye too strong when the sides met in a MMP with Norman Lloyd, second-division game at Llanandras Park on Saturday, 12 October.

Newbridge headed home with all three points after a 7-1 victory and many observers felt the visitors looked one of the best sides they had seen at Llanandras Park for some time.

Aeron Powell put Newbridge in front after nine minutes but two goals in three minutes shortly after the half-hour mark effectively took the game away from Presteigne.

Kejan Foryszewski and Lyndon Jones appeared to have taken the game away from the home side but Duane Anning’s strike shortly before half-time gave Presteigne hope going into the break.

But Oliver Woods’ penalty four minutes after the break restored Newbridge’s three-goal lead while a brace from Sion Herman took the visitors out of sight.

Within a minute of Herman’s second goal, Woods struck again to round off the scoring in the 85th minute.

Credit to the Presteigne side who stuck to the task but who, on the day, were beaten by a better side – no disgrace in that.

An honourable mention to Presteigne goalkeeper Liam Tomkins whom even the opposition felt should have been named man-of-the-match as he made a number of fine saves.

To the majority of home supporters who got behind the side and encouraged the players – thank you very much.

To the minority – and it is a minority – who were reportedly negative in their comments after the match – well, yes, it is disappointing, but it’s worth remembering that we are not paying any players this year and the lads deserve a lot of credit for sticking to the task.

It might come as a shock to this minority, but we all – management, players and committee – are well aware results are not what we would be hoping for but to those who still support the players we’re grateful.

Onwards – and it’s Aberystwyth University at Llanandras Park on Tuesday, 15 October when the kick off will be at 7.30pm.
