CP Llanandras put up a good showing before exiting the Newcastle Cup at the semi-final stage when they lost in a penalty shoot-out against Bishops Castle.

Some were fearing the worst, given CP Llanandras had taken a 11-0 battering at Builth Wells on Saturday, while Bishops Castle reached the semi-final of the Emrys Morgan Cup, but those concerns proved unfounded.

A goal down at half-time, ‘Crowie’s’ side hit back after the interval when they raised their game and were rewarded when Kyle Whitefoot equalised.    Tom Gibbs and Merv Stephens then both hit the bar as CP pushed for the winner, but neither side could force the breakthrough.

The shoot-out saw Bishops Castle’s keeper save three CP Llanandras spot kicks, while Castle missed the target with two of theirs so Bishops Castle came through 3-2 in the shoot-out and will now face Newcastle in the final.

Andy Crowe was delighted by the side’s showing and especially by the reaction shown following the previous day’s game at Builth.

“It could have gone one of two ways after the Builth game, but I seriously think the lads learnt a lot from playing against a very good Builth side,” he said.

“We really raised our game after the break today and could easily have nicked it, especially with Merv Stephens’ shot.

“Everyone on the sidelines started cheering because they thought the shot was dipping under the bar, but unfortunately it didn’t quite dip enough,” he added.
