Review of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FCSpar Mid Wales League champions Penparcau suffered a defeat on the opening day of their defence of the first division title when they were beaten 3-2 at Llansantffraid Village.

The big winners of the day were Carno who came away from Newbridge with a 4-0 victory in a game in which Adriano Girolami was sent off reportedly a bit harshly for two yellow cards.

Llanrhaeadr picked up the first win of the season with a 1-0 Friday-night win at newly-promoted Llanidloes Town while Berriew saw off Builth Wells 4-1 in what was both clubs’ first game back at this level as they were two divisions apart last season.

Waterloo Rovers and Dolgellau battled out a 2-2 draw at Welshpool while in the day’s only second division match, Four Crosses and Abermule battled out a 1-1 draw.

There were a number of Welsh Cup preliminary round ties but there was not too much joy for the local clubs involved – Llandrindod Wells went down 2-1 at Trethomas Bluebirds while Talgarth Town found Fleur De Lys too hot to handle at home where they went down 5-0.  There was an all-Spar League second division clash at Tregaron Turfs where Montgomery Town ran out 3-2 winners.

In the Mid Wales League (South), in addition to the Reserves’ heavy 7-0 defeat at Talgarth Town Reserves, there was a win for Knighton Town – 2-1 at Builth Wells Reserves.    Llandrindod Wells Reserves ensured Presteigne Reserves did not suffer the heaviest defeat of the opening day as they beat St Harmon 8-0 at The Broadway.

Rhayader Town Reserves beat visiting Hay St Marys Reserves 3-2 while league newcomers Knighton Victoria picked up their first-ever league point when they held visiting Newbridge Reserves to a 3-3 draw at Bryn-y-Castell.
