Presteigne St Andrews Under 18s maintained their good form in the HFA Floodlit Youth League this season but they were fortunate to take all three points from their 3-2 home victory over Pegasus Juniors at Llanandras Park.

All seemed to be on track when, after a bright start to the game, Connor Bird put Presteigne on their way when he netted from a narrow angle on 17 minutes – he had earlier hit the Pegasus cross bar.

But the home side was to squander a number of good chances in that first period and realistically should have been out of sight by the time the interval came around – instead they found themselves pegged back to 1-1 when the visitors netted five minutes before the interval.

After a bright start to the second period, Presteigne dropped right off the pace and Pegasus visibly grew in stature – but despite this the home side had a gilt-edged opportunity to regain the league when they were correctly awarded a penalty, but Callum Matthews put his spot kick wide of the target.

Connor Bird then netted his second goal of the night to put Presteigne back in front, but credit to Pegasus they kept going and got a deserved second equaliser.

It was deep in stoppage time when a deep cross from the right eventually fell to Max Lewis who scored the winning goal from close range.

Even as a ‘one-eyed’ Presteigne supporter, this was hard on Peggie who did enough in the second half to take a point from the game.

Presteigne’s manager Trevor Gummer and his coaching team will no doubt regard this as a wake-up call for the team, but a win is a win – and this was their third victory over Pegasus this season.

A more detailed report will appear on the site at some stage on Tuesday 25 January, but Trevor tells me this could be later in the day as he has to take a ‘work break’ at some stage and justify his existence to his employers – I know how he feels…
