Late defeat for first team, but Ressies bounce back

Presteigne St Andrews FC
Max Powell was on target for the first team

Presteigne St Andrews are staring down both barrels in terms of relegation now after they suffered a late defeat at fellow strugglers Dolgellau.

In an eventful game, Presteigne went ahead through Ryan Stokes who followed up after his own penalty had been saved – a lead Presteigne held until the interval.

But the home side was then successful with two penalty kicks of their own to take a 2-1 lead – the first I am told was dubious after Trevor Gummer was adjudged to have fouled a Dolgellau player – the second was reportedly ‘stonewall’ following a challenge by Spencer Napolitano.

Max Powell appeared to have salvaged a point for Presteigne when he scored with an overhead kick with only a minute remaining, but there was to be a further twist in the tale as Dolgellau went up the other end to take all three points with an injury-time winner.

There was better news for the Reserves who completed a league double over Hay St Marys in the Mid Wales League (South).

Andy White, Ieuan Crowe and Alan Stocker were all on target for Andy Crowe’s side before the interval at Llanandras Park as the Reserves produced an excellent first-half showing – an excellent response to the midweek Penybont Cup defeat.

They didnt’ quite hit those heights in the second period, but by then they had done enough to ensure the three points were in the bag.

‘Crowie’s’ side also hit the woodwork three times during the game so the  margin could have been greater, but the early signs are that they were pretty satisfied by their day’s work.

The Reserves will return to action tomorrow afternoon (Sunday 3 April) when they will take on Builth Wells Reserves in part two of a double header at Llanandras Park.

A reminder that the club is now on Twitter so why not follow us and share your opinions (within the bounds of decency..!)

Part one will see Rhayader Town take on Talgarth Town in an Otway Cup semi-final (kick off 1.30pm), while the Ressies versus Builth is due to get underway at 4.30pm – they meet in an Alfred Sparey Cup semi-final.
