Presteigne Reserves missed out in the Builth Spa Cup final after they were beaten 4-1 in a penalty shoot out by the home side Buith Wells Reserves.

A goal down before the interval, Presteigne Reserves hit back to lead 2-1 courtesy of goals from Christian Roberts and Duane Anning, but Builth Reserves levelled before half-time.

There was no addition to the scoring after the interval and so it was into extra time in which Christian Roberts was again on target to put Presteigne Reserves back in front.

But they were unable to hold on to that lead – in the words of ‘Crowie’ they ‘switched off a bit in the second period of extra time’ and a long through ball caught out the Presteigne defence allowing the home side to tie the game up at 3-3.

Sadly the proficiency from 12 yards that had served the Reserves so well in the Radnor Valley Cup final deserted them this time around as the Builth keeper – credit to him – saved three of Presteigne’s spot kicks and so the chance of a second trophy this season was gone.

Andy Crowe gave credit to the Builth keeper but was left frustrated by his side’s failure to convert good possession and position into goals.

“We had a number of one-on-ones in both the game itself and extra time but we just weren’t able to take them,” he said.

“Overall, I think we were the better side but you have to take your chances when they come along or you are going to get punished.

“It was disappointing as the game was there to be won but it has gone now and so we will just have to focus on the remaining league games.”
