Footballers triumph in cricket clash

Presteigne St Andrews FC’s players changed sports at the weekend – and to pretty good effect as they picked up a one-wicket win in their cricket match against, er, the Cricket Club.

In defence of the Cricket Club, it wasn’t their first team but nonetheless this was still a very good win for the footballers and a very decent game into the bargain.

Alan Stocker was the star turn for the Football Club’s XI, as he made 132 that included 17 fours and five sixes – clearly he was still a bit fired up after the red card he received at Knighton Town on the Saturday(!)

But in all seriousness that must have been an innings worth seeing as it helped the Football Club XI chase down a victory target of 239 with one wicket to spare.

He was well supported by Andy Bray – who was playing his first-ever cricket match – and who made 26 not out, while Rob Williams made 10.

Earlier, Andy Bray took 3-16 and Ryan Stokes 2-33 at the Cricket Club’s Sunday side made 238-7 with Ed Pitt making 63 and Merv Stephens 59.

Youngster Ben Chibnell-Smith was the pick of the Cricket Club attack as he took 3-14 from his six overs.

Alan Stocker said the day had been a great success and he was grateful to everyone who had been involved, either in playing in the game or by raising funds for the Friends of Presteigne Cancer Care through a raffle.

“We raised £132.00 for the Friends of Presteigne Cancer Care with Becky Preece – Dougie’s Daughter – winning the £5.00 prize for guessing the closest score with 220,” said Alan.

“Mark Weiland was the representative of the charity and he would like to pass on their grateful thanks for the money raised.

“Our thanks also to the Cricket Club – I am not sure they were too pleased to lose out to the footballers but it was a good day.”
